Exhibition text
Mother and Daughter Bond represents the bond between a mother and a daughter. It shows that they are like ying and yang where one is light and one is dark. Even though one of them is dark they still have a close bond between each other. A mother an daughter bond can never be broken and there is always love between a mother and a daughter even when life is dark for one of them. A mother and daughter bond is forever until something happens that the bond begins to break. I came up with this piece after seeing how mine and my mother's bond began to break after she died. My artist inspiration is Picasso's portrait of his mother and Van Gogh's painting "Sun Flower."

Portrait of Picasso's Mother
Picasso,1896 49,8 x 39cm |
I chose Picasso's portrait or his mother because I wanted to do something that incorporated my mother. I seen that he did a portrait and I decided that I could do something of my mother that shows her and who she is. I decided to do her zodiac sign and her favorite flower because the zodiac sign represents the person she is and the type of characteristics she has. His portrait gave me multiple ideas for this piece but I decided to do something that had her and me in it.

Sun Flowers
Van Gogh, 1888 92.1 x 73cm |
Van Gogh's painting of Sun Flowers gave me inspiration. I decided to include two flowers in my piece and I noticed that his flowers looked as if they were dying and I decided to put two flowers and have one look as if it was falling. I decided to do that because the bond for me and my mother is beginning to die because of her death. I also noticed some of his flowers were open as if they were not dying yet and I put both of my flowers open because the bond we have is still there but is beginning to die.

I chose the ying and yang symbol because the white side represents positivity and heavan. The black side represents negative and earth. My mom reperesents the light and positive side and I represent the dark and negative side. My mom always made me feel positive and was my light when I was down. She also is the white side because she represnts hevan and is looking down at me when im on earth.

Planning Sketches
This is the first sketch i wanted to do. I wanted to put two different flowers for mine and my mom's birthday. I also put our zodiac signs and I added the ying and yang because it represents the bond. It also represents how I am the dark and my mom is the light. My mom is the light of my life.
|
This is the second sketch I did and this is the one I did for my final product. I decided to change the flowers but keep the zodiac signs, the ying and yang, and the heart in the middle. I wanted to change the flowers to show that I am her twin and we act like each other. I wanted to change my flower to show that. I wanted to show the tight and loving bond between me and my mother.

Experimentation
I decided to do two prints to see if the second one came out better but over all I liked the first one better. This took me some time to do because I had to make sure I didn't remove ink that I needed when I had to get rid of the left over ink. After I took it off the roller the image on the left is what the final piece looks like and the image on the right is what the carving plate looks like. The image looks backwards but that's the way I wanted it to look like to make the image onto the paper. I needed to be careful pulling the paper off to make sure I didn't make a double image onto my paper. When I pulled it off I got the final print. I did a second print and after pulling the paper off my carving I seen that the paper moved and caused blurriness and marks where I didn't want any. I decided to stay with the first ink I did.
Process
|
I had to do two prints because the first one turned out good but I wanted to see if I did another print if it would turn out better. The first print I did I liked because it shows a fading that reminds me of how our bond between us is slowly fading away and we are starting to lose the bond since she died.
This is the second print and this one I didn't like because is got smudged and it was a little more faded then the first one. I feel like if this one wasn't smudged it would be a good print and I would of chose this one rather than the first. This second one I still like but I don't like how it smudged and was a little harder to read. |
When I finished my carving I started to print it onto the paper. The first thing I needed to do was soak the paper in water for about 8 minutes. After the 8 minutes was up I took it out of the water and dried it off on two towels. I needed to be careful so I didn't crumple the paper or get any marks on my paper.
|
When I was finished I took the carving plate and layed it onto a sheet of paper and put the wet paper on top of the carving. I then took it over the the roller and made sure the paper was in the center of the roller. I then layed the rubber on the paper and rolled it to the other side of the roller making sure the wet paper didn't move to create a double image.

Critique
Altogether I feel like my piece shows the bond between me and my mother with the ying and yang symbol and us both having the same flower. In Picasso's piece I feel like I could of also incorporated something that showed who she was and what she really meant to me. My piece doesn't use a person like Picasso's does but I was still able to get an inspiration from his piece and from Van Gogh's piece with the sun flowers. I was able to take something from both pieces and add it into my piece for my final product. I wanted to add texture to my piece to also incorporate the flowers from Van Gogh's piece. His sun flowers have texture to them to make them look almost real.
Reflection
My art pieces help me take risks and show me new things. This piece showed me that you can make art out of stippling or cross hatching. I did have struggles making the piece. I didn't know if I wanted to do it or do something else and it was hard for me to find artist that I could get inspiration from. I started explaining what my piece wad going to be to my friend and as I was telling her the idea and some ideas I was things of I started to build this piece and sketch what this piece was going to look like. I knew that I was going to make mistakes but I knew it was okay because people make mistakes and you can learn from them in the long run.
ACT Connection
- Picasso and Van Gogh had and effective impact on my piece because Picasso's portrait of his mother helped me come up with the idea of having my mother incorporated. Van Gogh's "Sun Flowers" helped me come up with the idea of adding flowers to my piece.
- The overall approach the authors had was to teach me about their techniques and how they came up with the idea of the piece. Also their background to show how they cam up with the piece they made.
- I came to a conclusion that people express things in different ways. People express their feeling and thoughts through multiple things to get it across to someone who wants to know about them. Also that everyone has their own idea for art.
- The central idea around my inspirational research was how people express their loss for someone and how they show their love towards someone who isn't here anymore.
- I made an inference that people have different way of expressing loss and people express them in ways that only they could really feel but also that others could feel as well.
