For this piece I wanted to have people feel like they were walking through a portal from one place to another. I created this piece because I wanted people to enjoy how big and beautiful the lake really is. This piece was created so people can enjoy the scenery in the daylight and at night time. My piece is for people to know how big the lake really is and how beautiful the lake is. The lake is a beautiful place and I want people to enjoy it at its finest. My inspiration was Richard Serra and how he used curved and slanted objects to create space and portals. I wanted my piece to make it seem like you were walking through a tunnel going into a new place.
Inspiration
Richard Serra was my artist inspiration because of the way he used the boulders and the shapes he made. I wanted to use him because of the way my ideas look and the way the walls are formed. My piece used different shapes and I wanted to find and artist that used different figures and shapes to create a piece. This artist used large heavy boulders to create his piece and make it look like someone was walking through a tunnel.
Process
My piece shows that the land and water flow together and make it look like it was supposed to be there to show off the lake and how big it really is. People will feel a sense of closure but they will also feel a sense of space because my piece will be small at the beginning and it will get bigger as you walk through. My piece is open at the top so you can enjoy the view of the sky and as you walk you will see the lake and how big it really is and enjoy what the environment really looks like and why it was created. My structure shows off the lake by showing how big the lake really is and how much of the land is water that someone can enjoy and show that the environment is beautiful and that it is the way it is and people can enjoy it. My structure shows path because it shows that there is a way that you can enjoy the sky and then view a bigger picture of the lake as you walk through my structure. Also it shows portal because you enter a small area and then you enter into a different area and you can see how much of something you can enjoy. It can also show place because you are in one place (the structure) and then you enter into a bigger place (beach and the lake.) My structure means that you can enjoy the bigger things in small parts and that there is always a path to a bigger area. Meaning there is always a bigger path to the future and what you can really enjoy. My three decisions are what you can enjoy as a bigger picture, what a path really means to someone, and enjoying a smaller picture going into a larger picture.
Reflection
Overall I like the way this project turned out. I never understood architecture and how you would create a piece like this. After Bob coming and showing us what the piece is I got and idea of what I wanted to do and how I wanted it to look. When Bob came back he liked the idea I had and he wanted me to add more. I decided to add a arch before the tunnel so it would look more like you were walking into a new place. When we went to MIAD for the critiques, they liked what I had and had some ideas on how to make it better. I took those ideas and decided to change the way the arch looked and make it more so the arch and the tunnels go together. I really like the way this turned out for my first time doing architecture. I would love to do something like this again and see how far I can really take an idea and a room. I would change only the way I made the arch look at the end because it was hard for me to make the arch the way they wanted me to.
ACT Connection
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause-effect relationships between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork
When I was working on the piece I was thinking about how Richard Serra made his pieces and I wanted to create something like his but a little more in depth and more to where people had more way to get around it.
What is the overall approach (pov) the author (from research) has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
My artist wanted to be able to have people walk into his work and make it seem like they were walking into a tunnel. He also wanted people to be able to enjoy his work without it just being a big block of metal.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
People enjoy trying new things and going places they have never been before. People like to explore new creations like tunnels or buildings. Overall people want to try new things to see if they like it or not, they also like making it seem like you are going into a new place that you have never been before to get the experience.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central theme I had was people trying new things and making people want to enjoy what you made. I also wanted people to be able to enjoy a place for its beauty and what It is there for.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
People didn't like Richard Serra and the pieces he made. They thought his work was garbage and it shouldn't be in that place. They way the didn't like Richard only made his work much better because people were starting to go up to it and see what it was.
