“Ring Ring”
Exhibition Text
For this project I wanted to create a timeline of phones from the 1920´s to now. I wanted to show how the phones have evolved and become more useful. Phones in the 1920´s were only able to call, but as they improved they started to be able to text and go on the internet. Phones are very important and useful in this generation because people rely on a phone to be able to get them from one place to another or to help them find what they are looking for. Phones in the 1920´s were either connected to a wall or a phone that you were not able to carry around with you. As the time went by the phone started getting smaller and easier to carry around with you. For my project I want to draw phones from the 1920´s to now and create a timeline of all of them to show people that in the 1920´s and before now, people were not able to do the things we can do with a phone and it was harder for people to talk if they were not standing by a phone. I want to show people that phone keep becoming more and more technical and now able to fit into your hands.
Meaning
The meaning of this piece is that people should appreciate the phone they have now because back in the day you did not have a touch screen phone that can text and take pictures. I want to show people that people back then were only able to talk on the phone and if they were lost they had to ask someone for directions, they could not look it up on their phone. They were not able to call someone if they were standing outside to ask for directions. I want my meaning to be what I make and what other people think the meaning could be. I want people to be able to create their own meaning with this piece and have fun with it.
Planning
I started out by planning on what I wanted to do. Either a drawing or taking photos of the phones and making a timeline of them. I wanted to try both out so I drew three phones put and I didn’t like the way they turned out so I decided to take photos of the phones and put them in a circular timeline to show how phones evolved. I noticed some phones from other generations were the same so I tired to find a phone that was similar to the others. I wanted to use phones that I knew people would be used to and know from back then. I wanted to make sure the phones looked okay printed out and cut out.
Process
After I found out what I wanted to do I started laying everything out to make sure it was the way I want it to be. I tried a couple ideas on laying the images out and decided that I liked when they formed a circle to show that the timeline may come back around and some people may want to use the older phones rather than the newer ones. I started laying out all the images from the 1920's to now and had them over lap each other to show that the phones started to change and that they have changed a lot since the 20's. I wanted to make the timeline look like it was still changing and that it could come back around over time. I wanted to first draw out the images but I didn't like that idea so I cut the pictures out and created a timeline of them. I started by laying them out in order then started playing around with them to see how they would look. When I figured out the way I wanted them to look I took a couple pictures and liked the way they turned out so I used that for my project.
Reflection
Overall I like the way the project turned out. At first I wasn't sure on what I wanted to do but after playing around with everything I knew what I wanted to project to look like and it turned out good. It was hard for me to make the drawings look like a timeline so I knew that I shouldn't do that as a project and make it look like a timeline. I wanted to make sure it looked like a real timeline and make it look like the phones are starting to change and that the phones are becoming more advanced. I wanted to make the phones look a different way but they ways I tried didn't turn out and they didn't look like a timeline. I like the way it turned out but I would change the way the picture looks and make it look like the picture is spinning. Overall the way it turned out was good but I would just change a couple things on it but I wouldn't change the whole project.
ACT Connection
Clearly explain how you are able to identify the cause effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect on your artwork
My inspiration showed me that I could create a timeline any way and that the timeline would still show that the phones have changed over time.
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration?
The culture wants to show that phones have changed a lot over time and they are still changing every year or two.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, culture, etc. while you researched your inspiration?
The conclusion I came across was that people don't know how hard it was back then when people weren't able to text each other or search the internet with their phone and people know just take it for granted.
What is the central idea or theme around your inspirational research?
The central idea around my inspiration was showing the way phones changed and how they have become more technical and more advanced.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research?
I seen that phones still have some of the old phone ideas they just changed the way they look and what they can do.
