Night Melody
Exhibition Text
Night Melody is a acrylic painting that is based off of how music can calm someone down at night and relax them. I wanted to create this piece to show that music can calm someone down at night to help them sleep or if they had a bad day and just want to relax. I like to listen to music at night to calm myself down and be able to relax before I go to bed. Music can usually calm someone. My inspiration behind this piece is Vincent Van Gogh “Starry Night” and society referring to people and music.
Meaning
The meaning behind this piece is that music can calm someone who has had even the worst day ever. This piece shows that listening to music at night can calm someone and that is what people do when they want to relax. People listen to music so they can relax and be able to go to bed without being stressed. I always listen to music before I go to bed so I can relax and have a good night sleep so I am ready for the next day. People usually listen to music while they are doing homework because it helps them relax and be able to finish their homework. The whole meaning behind this piece is that music helps calm people at night in order for them to sleep well and be ready for the next day.
Artist Inspiration
My inspiration behind this piece is Vincent Van Gogh's "Starry Night." I also used experience from myself as well because music helps relax me and help me relax before I go to bed. Vincent Van Gogh was my inspiration because his "Starry Night" background was something I would be able to use and I wanted something that represented the night. The "Starry Night" background was something that I wanted to use because it captured night time and how that is usually the time when everyone relaxes and gets ready to go to bed. I also looked up simple music notes that I would be able to add into the piece to show that there is music playing and that someone was listening to it. I image search music notes that look like they were flowing together and making it look like there was music being played. I also used my experience because music helps me relax at night and it helps me get ready for bed. I wanted to combine the both of them to create a piece that people could also relate to as well as me. I used my experience because I wanted this piece to relate to me and other people who do the same thing. I wanted my inspiration to be Vincent Van Gogh and people because that was the meaning behind the piece because it is something that people do to relax and DE-stress from the day. I also wanted to have Vincent Van Gogh as my inspiration because of the way he used his colors to create movement and how he used simple blue colors to create the night sky. Also the way he was able to create movement with simple brush strokes. I wanted to add his technique of colors and the way he was able to create movement but have my own twist in it.

Planning
The first thing I wanted to do was sketch out what I wanted to piece to look like when I combine the two inspirations together. I wanted to make sure I had multiple sketches to chose from so I pick the one that would show the meaning behind the piece. My sketches took me a while because I wanted to make sure they had the detail I was going to add and what the piece was going to look like. I wanted to make sure the final sketch I chose was something I wanted to do and what was going to make my piece stand together.
In my second sketch I changed the way the background looked and added headphones and the screen on the phone. I liked this sketch a lot because the background was the way I wanted and the phone looked good in the spot with the headphones. My plan for this final sketch is making the phone larger than what it originally looks like and have a song playing on the phone with the tittle and speed.

Process
I wanted to get the technique Vincent van Gogh had while he was painting “Starry Night” but also have my own technique to mix with it. I wanted to make sure I added what people told me to add during my critique. After I added what they told me to I had them re-look at my project before it was complete to see if I should add anything else or if I should do things a little different in order to fill up the canvas. They told me that I should add more colors and make sure that they flow and that none look like they shouldn’t be there. I started by painting the main background color on my canvas so the lighter colors will show up and I wouldn't have to worry about the colors not showing. I then painted the moon and the colors that would go around it. I experimented how I wanted to put the swipes of paint and when I found out what technique I wanted I finished painting the background to add the final piece of the painting. I used multiple skills to make the swipes of paint. The first thing I did was hold my wrist and just flick my hand to see if that was the way I wanted them. I also decided to put the brush onto the canavs and just hold it there to make a thick swipe mark. I liked the second idea better because I was able to add more colors and make the piece come alive. I mixed the lighters color blues and began to paint to lines/swipes onto the canvas and create movement with them. After I finished making the swipes I sketched out where the phone and headphones would go and began painting the phone. I let the phone dry before I painted to headphones and anything that had to go on the phone. The last thing I did was paint to music notes and make sure that the swipes and phone were the way I wanted them to be. Before I finished I added a little more swipes in the background to fill up some of the empty spaces and have more movement going on. I took ideas form my last project and from my artist and combined them together to make me own idea of how to make my piece. I noticed when I finished painting that other works that weren’t mine had somewhat of the same idea I was going for but they had their own taste to it. I noticed that my idea was something not many people did so I knew that it was something that I was able to do. After my project was done I wanted to have people critique it to see if they like the way it turned out or if I should add something else to make the piece pop more. They told me that the layout was good and that they wasn’t anything that didn’t look like it should be there and that there isn’t anything else to add.
Compare and Contrast
Similarities and Differences
The similarities in my inspiration and my piece is the colors and the way the focal point is in the bottom left corner. Also how both pieces create a sense of movement while looking at the piece. In Van Gogh's painting there is more brush strokes filling the back ground and creating more movement. In my piece there is more of the background color showing and less movement in the piece. Van Gogh's piece uses more light blues than dark blues and in my piece there is more of dark blues than light blues. In Van Gogh's piece there is more flowing brush strokes and they look more relaxed. In my piece the brush strokes are larger and look stressed. Between the two pieces Van Gogh's piece is more relaxed and flowing and my piece looks more simple and doesn't have a lot of movement. Finally when you see Van Gogh's piece in real life the piece is larger and the paint is clumped up. When you see my piece in real life it is smaller and the paint is less clumped up and more smooth.
Reflection
Overall I like the way Night Melody turned out. I like the way the headphones tie with the movement of the background and that you can make out that there is a phone with headphones and music notes. The only thing I would change is the color of the back ground, I would make the background color a little lighter so the music notes will show better. I wanted to demonstrate that I have an understanding of the inspiration I used and what colors I used for my piece. I would also change the marks I put by the moon because they look clumped together and I could of added blues to make the moon look better. It took me awhile to finish this piece but I like they way it turned out and the way the piece flows. I wanted to make sure this piece was what I wanted it to look like and feel like when someone looks at the piece. After finishing the project I really like the way it turned put and the way the piece flows. I would make more pieces like this but just change what the idea is.
